“A thing is worth what it can do for, not what you choose to pay for it.”

― Publilius Syrus (~50 B.C.)

To continue on with this introductory series of posts, we think it’s important that we spell out what Project Hedgehog will not do for you. We want to make sure you know what you aren’t getting before you make any decision about whether or not you want to upgrade to a paid subscription.

First of many disclaimers: I am not a licensed financial advisor or professional trader. I do not have any licenses, degrees, certifications, or anything else in the areas of finance, investing, or economics.

All content on this website and email newsletters - including any discussions of specific investments, trades, or strategies - is for informational and educational purposes only and should not be considered personalized financial advice.

Investing involves risk, and you could lose money. Any investment decisions, trades, or actions you take are made at your own risk. Always conduct your own thorough research before making any investment decisions.

Get Rich or Die Trying?

Most importantly, this is not a “get rich quick” scheme.  If you are desperate to turn $10,000 into $100,000 in two years, we can’t help you with that.  We would make the argument that no one can help you with that, because any strategies that have that kind of potential for payout also have tremendous risks involved that you really can’t afford to take with a significant percentage of your funds.  If you like lottery tickets and buy one every once in a while for fun, that’s probably not going to hurt you. But you shouldn’t invest everything you’ve saved into lottery tickets.

In a way, Project Hedgehog is the opposite of a lottery ticket.  We’ll show you how to perform the sustained grind of long-term investing in a way that can get better results than traditional approaches.  This is a marathon, not a sprint.

I Was Told There Would Be No Math

We will do our best not to make this journey too technical in terms of detailed math.  All the math really needed to run the strategies would have been learned before exiting the 6th grade.

In the places where we go deeper into the details for the math people who really want to know more about what’s happening behind the scenes, we will call out that the post can be skipped by those who simply are not interested.

Personal Finance is Personal

We do not cover the topic of personal finance too deeply in Project Hedgehog.  By that we mean the posts that follow will not answer questions about how much you should spend vs. save, or which debts are good or bad to have hanging around your neck, or if you should go with Roth or traditional forms of 401Ks/IRAs, or how much can you afford to spend on a house/car, or anything of the sort.

We’re locked into just one mission: Developing a set of strategies for long-term investing that can beat the compounding average of the broader stock market.

You Pay for What You Get

This work originally started in book format which included many sample historical investments to make it very clear how the strategy works. But I also realized that it would be valuable to have a ongoing series of newsletter/web posts showing additional investments that match our strategies in “real time”. This will serve as continuing education covering not only how to spot these investments, but also how to manage them on a week-to-week basis as time passes and markets shift.

So I landed on the idea of publishing the book content as a series of posts on a paid website, and the ongoing education aspect could be covered as a paid email newsletter and posts on the same website.

Here’s exactly what happens if you decide to become a paid subscriber:

  • You gain access to all the base lessons outlined below.

  • This content is immediately accessible as posts on the website for you to read through at your own pace.

  • You will receive all the ongoing education as long as you keep your subscription active. This includes all the investments that we make ourselves at Project Hedgehog: notification of new positions we set up, weekly tracking of any adjustments, and ongoing results of our investments.

  • We will also periodically post additional deep-dive articles on the Project Hedgehog view of other topics related to long-term investing as we receive questions from subscribers.

Structure of the Paid Content

There are a total of 17 lessons that will be immediately available to you when you activate a paid subscription.

Key Ideas Behind The Strategy

This first set of lessons will compare the investments we use in Project Hedgehog with other common types of investments to see how well each strategy meets our four Core Principles.

We will also look at some counterintuitive ideas about how compounding investments really work and mistakes in modelling long-term investments that even experienced investors and financial professionals frequently make.

Basic Training

In this series of lessons, we will cover some basic components you’ll need to learn to be ready to set up each of the investments. We’ll go step-by-step covering each individual component in detail before we move on to the next.

Core Investments - How to Set Up, Manage, Close

Here we will combine the individual components we learned in the Basic Training section into actual positions in your investment accounts.

We will also share dozens of examples of past trades using real data.  We’ll see “happy path” examples where the position was relatively easy to manage, and also examples where something unexpected happened and how we handled it.

Portfolio and Risk Management

Once we have covered how to set up individual investments, we will cover how to manage and track an entire portfolio of these positions.

We will also cover the topic of risk management in the portfolio.  This is made easier in Project Hedgehog because no individual position ever has undefined risk. But we will show how to turn the dials of risk and reward so you can manage your investments they way you want.

Ongoing Education

All of the paid content listed above contains everything you need to learn how to set up investments and manage your portfolio.

But Project Hedgehog doesn’t stop there! We post weekly messages with new positions that we have set up at Project Hedgehog as well as ongoing tracking of everything in portfolio.
